What are baby highlights?

Baby highlights, also called babylights, are very thin sections of hair lightened in foils and placed close together. They copy the soft, even brightness children get from the sun, so there are no chunky stripes and the regrowth is subtle.

Half head or full head?

Half head highlights brighten the top and the sections around your face, which is where light hits first. Full head highlights brighten all the way through for a more even, lighter result. If you already have highlights, a half head is often enough to refresh them.

Keeping blonde bright

A toner (from $65) adjusts the shade after lightening, from cool and icy to warm and golden. A glaze (from $85) between visits restores shine and tone, and Olaplex ($55) helps protect hair while it is lightened.

FAQ

Questions clients ask

How much do baby highlights cost on the Upper East Side?

At María Cortes NY half head highlights are $165 and full head babylights are $250. Toner and blowdry are not included.

Do highlights include toner and a blowdry?

No. Toner is an add on for $65 and a blowdry is charged separately by hair length. The Blonde Special ($275) includes half balayage or half baby highlights, an Olaplex treatment and styling.

What is the difference between baby highlights and balayage?

Baby highlights are fine foils placed close together for even brightness from near the root. Balayage is painted by hand for a softer, more lived in blend.

How often should I refresh highlights?

It depends on how fast your hair grows and how much contrast you like. Many people refresh highlights every few months and use a glaze or toner in between.
